Kaymu.pk releases Pakistan’s ecommerce trends report

[Lahore, 22nd June 2015]Kaymu.pk, an online shopping community, recently released a report detailing out the eCommerce and online shopping trends in Pakistan. Pakistan’s online industry is still in its early days; hence, a lot of factors have yet to be determined regarding the trends of the country’s online industry.

This ecommerce report released by Kaymu.pk gives a detailed insight into the consumer behavior and their approach to online shopping, as well as discussing some key findings of internet usage in the country.

Through the research conducted by Kaymu and the facts collated, it can be observed that the most actively involved eCommerce users in Pakistan fall under the age bracket of 18-34 years.The report also reveals that over 50% of eCommerce traffic in Pakistan comes from the country’s three major cities;Lahore with 21% of total traffic, closely followed by Karachi at 20%, and Islamabad/Rawalpindi with 15% of total e-commerce activity each year.

When talking about the gender divide the report observe that out of the total e-commerce activities carried out, 70% comprised of male users, with females involved in only 30% of the total activity. 

The Kaymu report also revealed that new users are also being attracted to online shopping. New online shopping visitors stand at 44% of the total traffic, while returning visitors are 56%. The two most purchased products of online shoppers in Pakistan are clothing items and electronic devices.

The report also looks into the devices and operating systems being used by online buyers. Around 80% online purchasers use either a desktop computer or laptop; while the remaining 20% is divided between smartphones and tablets. Hence, it comes as no surprise that almost 77% of the users access online shopping websites via Windows operating system. It is then followed by android and the rest like iOS, BlackBerry follow the cue.

Lahore gets on board the #KaymuKaravan

[Lahore, 13th June 2015]The #KaymuKaravan, a one of its kind initiative by Kaymu.pk, is currently on its 10 day journey through Pakistan. The Karavan entered Lahore on the 11^th of June, after a successful journey through Karachi, and will head to Islamabad/Rawalpindi for the final phase of the campaign.

Lahore has welcomed the #KaymuKaravan with the usual fervor and zealLahories are famous for. The #KaymuKarvan has attracted people from all walks of life and age brackets, with families and youngsters participating in the fun filled activities the Karavan has brought along. The #KaymuKarvan has been distributing exciting prizes through a number of activities, while also giving participants a chance to bag discount vouchers which they can avail while shopping through Kaymu.pk.

The #KaymuKaravanalso made a special stop at a bloggers meetup arranged by Kaymu.pk in Lahore. During the meetup the online gurus gave their feedback on Kaymu.pk’s performance in Pakistan and shared ideas on how Kaymu can improve its services in the country. The bloggers got on board the #KaymuKaravan as the truck made its stop at the event. Analysts Cut LG Profit Estimates as G4 Lags in Sales

The LG G4 was hailed as an excellent phone all over the internet but it seems that has not shown in the sales numbers. Many analysts have reduced their forecasts for the second quarter over concerns about LG’s latest flagship.

At the time of launch, LG G4 was expected to sell 8 million units in 2015, around 2.6 million units per quarter. However, the second quarter shipments are expected to be less than 2.5 million meaning that actual sales might be even lower than that. This has led analysts to slash profit estimates and now it seems the company might not even match the $66 million operating profit it posted in Q1 2015.

One of the reasons that could have hindered the G4 sales is its pricing in different markets. Another could be the lack of major improvements over the G3. The biggest factor might have been LG’s promise of releasing another flagship device later this year which could have resulted in potential customers delaying their purchases until it is released.

Despite excellent reviews, LG G4 has failed to meet sales estimates

Aside from the G4 sales, LG’s marketing expenditure has definitely reduced the company’s profits. LG has increased their marketing expenditures over the first quarter to present the G4 as a competent alternative to the likes of Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple’s iPhone 6. Additional marketing expenses mean lesser profits per device.

Daishin Securities and Korea Investment & Securities have decreased their expected forecasts for LG Mobile division to $50.7 million from $92.3 million and $61 million from $104 million respectively. Another firm, NH Investments & Securities has lowered their forecast to $58 million from $86 million too.

The joint consensus boils down that LG’s operating profit will fall somewhere between $54 to $59 million which is considerably less than Q1’s $66 million and Q4 2014’s operating profit of $78 million.

LG’s whole smartphone business is not going downhill as the company said that it would invest $155 million in India and could even set up production there. LG G4 is yet to go on sale in some markets and this could also mean more sales in the future which might compensate for the currently under-performing sales figures.

IVS students are working under the supervision of Adeela Suleman (Head of the Fine Arts Department). Students have chosento capitalize ontheir creativity and have selected paintbrushes as their weapon.

Apart from the university students, school children have also volunteered to take part in this project. The programtitled “Bachon se tabdili” havebeautified around 25 wallsin Shirin Jinnah Colony and Lyari and helped in painting some walls at MT Khan Road.University students have aimed to target about 1500 walls of the city. Their beautiful art work can be viewed near Hassan Square, Civic Centre, Saddar, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, MT Khan road, the Airport and Kala Pul.This campaign has successfully decorated 1000 walls, with only 500 left!

Another project named the “Individual Artists Project” focuses mainly on revamping the walls on MT Khan Road and the areas surrounding the Airport.  To our surprise, the students did not have to interact with any extremists, and this project was embraced rather than being shunned. Occasionally, people have yelled at the artists while othersgaze silently in awe. However, it has been observed that people do appreciate them,since the walls have remainedin a spotless and immaculate condition.

Nokia is Returning to the Smartphone Business in 2016

Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri has announced that the former world’s largest smartphone maker will return to the smartphone business next year. It won’t be making its own phones, but instead look for suitable partners like it did for the N1 tablet.

When Microsoft bought Nokia in 2014, one of the clauses was that the company won’t make any phones till the end of 2015. With 2016 approaching fast, the company is now quickly looking for partners to mark its return.

The handsets won’t be from Nokia in the traditional sense. While it can assist in designing those phones and allow others to license its name, it won’t be able to use its traditional Lumia, Asha or X series names as those are owned by Microsoft now as part of the $7.2 billion deal, nor would it manufacture those products itself.

“We will look for suitable partners,” said the CEO in an interview with Reuters. “Microsoft makes mobile phones. We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license.” Recently, it used the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn to build the N1 device. Foxconn is popular for its partnership with Apple.

Now that the Microsoft deal is done, this new Nokia is free to use any OS, including Android for its new phones. Just what kind of devices will we see and will they be as readily available as the Lumia and Asha phones remains to be seen. Remember that the N1 Android-running tablet was released on a very limited scale.

Meanwhile, Nokia continues to flourish with its acclaimed HERE mapping and other infrastructure services, both of which are in high-demand from all sides.

Concerns Force NA Panel to Defer Cybercrime Bill

An IT parliamentary panel has withheld its decision to approve the Cybercrime bill. In a meeting on Friday, the panel decided to delay its decision on the Electronic Crimes bill 2015 after some government advisors displayed concerns over the final draft of the bill.are on Twitter

It seems our concerns have been heard and they forced the bill approval to be delayed until some improvements are made. Captain(R) Muhammad Safdar, the Chairman of National Assembly’s Standing Committee for Information Technology, forwarded the concerns and criticism presented by lawmakers and the general public over the new bill at the meeting.

Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Khawaja Zaheer Ahmed opposed Captain Safdar’s proposal in a restricted public hearing. Captain Safdar said that after hearing the civil society’s reservations he has decided that the bill will not be put up for approval. Some of the advisors exhibited stern resistance to his decision but he did not change his decision.

He said:

I cannot approve this bill in its current form as I have not noticed lacunas earlier and after hearing [those] I’m convinced that there is a need for improvement in the bill.

He suggested that civil society members can discuss the bill in-detail with the IT Ministry officials and propose changes. Captain Safdar requested Lawyer Babar Sattar to help in improving the current draft.

He added:

We have already spent three months on this bill and we want to refer it to the speaker. But if he resends it for further deliberation then we again deliberate on this.

Safdar did not extend the deadline despite his decision to defer the bill. He refused the idea of having an open meeting special with Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ). Afzal Butt PFUJ President implied that journalists would stage a protest if the government chooses to ignore their concerns over the controversial bill.

Anusha Rehman, Minister of IT and Telecommunications, stated that the IT Ministry held several meetings with the stakeholders to discuss the achieve a consensus draft bill which was sent to the Prime Minister in February 2014 (Though their definition of stakeholders seems different since the population is the major stakeholder).

She claimed that the draft had been available on the ministry’s website and received no criticism at the time. She said that not all segments of society were part of the forum that decided to defer the bill and that several people who were initially part of the bill’s formation were not in this meeting.

Let’s hope that the government takes some time to change and improve the bill though the deadline would need to be renegotiated if the bill is to undergo in detailed discussions. The current timeframe might be too less for the aforementioned task.
