The 2015 Academy kicked off in fine style with the participant’s arrival at la Gaîté lyrique. After gawking at the recording gear in our bedroom studios, we sat down for a lecture by renowned French journalist Joseph Ghosn, who took us through forty years of Frenchchanson (with a Daft Punk detour). The participants met their studio tutors, including Modeselektor, Just Blaze and Underground Resistance legend “Mad” Mike Banks
After some prime French food we set out for Le Badaboum for some equally tasty French beats. The night included a psychedelic set from Joakim & Gilb’r, a rare set of twisted house from Pépé Bradock and a rousing rendition of gospel-disco classic “Stand On The Word” in a surprise appearance by the legendary Joubert Singers, all the way from Crown Heights, Brooklyn. It was a memorable beginning to what’s sure to be an inspiring time in Paris.
